pointOne EPoS makes existing technology ‘extinct’ as it transforms Jurassic coast QSR business.
Capels fish and chip restaurant is a forward-thinking dynamic QSR restaurant located on the dramatic Jurassic coast. Built in 1899, the first owner was Lord Clinton of Clinton Devon Estates and it has been a “fish cafe” since 1949.
Today, Capels is the only fish and chip shop in Exmouth with its own restaurant and currently employs both full and part-time staff who work hard to produce high-quality food.
Capels deployed pointOne EPoS four years ago when current owner Les Oldman, wanted to develop the potential of this long standing traditional business.
Les explains, “When I first purchased this business almost four years ago, it was a dream come true, a restaurant on the Jurassic coast with a vibrant takeaway bolted on to it. However, within three months’ of acquiring the restaurant I realised that whilst it’s a stunning business it was like holding a tiger by the tail!! The existing operation was almost unmanageable due to the volume of trade, so I kicked out all of the existing tech, and looked around for something that could realise its true potential.”
“All the tools I need”
He continues, “pointOne was the perfect solution. It offered all the tools I needed to get a handle on a very dynamic business, and the detail it gives me is like gold dust, giving me the numbers and facts that would otherwise not be available, but are critical to understanding where I can make the most margin on the business.”
“Powerful, yet simple to use”
Les also likes the fact that despite its powerful performance, it was very easy to use so his staff had no issues; “The staff absolutely bonded with the software. They just love the ease of operation, it’s so friendly and most importantly they can multi-task whilst working as a team on the tills and access both takeaway and restaurant at all times, tracking orders, tables and products.”
He continues, “The final jewel in the technology is the fact, and this is critical to any business, that you don’t have to adopt a flat-tier management system. Senior staff can make more informed decisions of operation whilst junior members of staff are controlled via pointOne authorisation protocol on the tills as to what they can and can’t do, such as give refunds, issue vouchers, take bookings and give discounts. This gives me greater empowerment, guiding the staff at all times, and it is something I will continue to develop.”
“It has transformed my business… Kitchen Management is my new electronic wizard”
Capels has recently added pointOne’s Kitchen Manager module to the restaurant. According to Les, this has had an immediate impact. He explains, “The kitchen management system has turned my business on its head and is my new electronic wizard. It’s like having a new business partner on-board.”
Les explains how it works:
“When we produce food, we select the prep item icon to start the timer. Then we mark the item as complete if ready or in transit if we are getting the item ready to go. It then ‘watches’ the product that you have cooked and in real time supervises the tables that are in service or awaiting service/order. Most importantly, this includes the payment status and finished transactions”.
Les continues, “It’s so unreal, this allows my front of house staff, waitresses etc to see where the product is in preparation and its allocation to a table or takeaway, whilst not being in the kitchen. They see it all which gives them the power to support the business and improve the functionality of its core purpose, delivering a high-quality product in a timely manner.”
Supports the takeaway business as well…
“When I first opened the business, many locals tried to get me to do a delivery service which I have always not wanted to do as we would not be able to support it. However, with the new Kitchen management system now in and functional, supported by the postcode look-up and caller-ID features…it’s a no brainer. I just know it will be a roaring success.”
According to Les, pointOne has been a tremendous success. It has transformed his business and he is very happy with the post-sales support. “I would like to say many thanks to the pointOne support team who have looked after our business, and responded to all our support needs. You are in safe hands with the pointOne support engineers. They have kept me ‘open for business’.”
Asked if he had any regrets with his relationship with pointOne… yes, he answered, just the one…
“Why didn’t I put pointOne and Kitchen Manager into my business sooner, like 25 years ago!”
